What to expect
If you haven't had counselling before, you may be unsure about what to expect. There is no set way that counselling has to progress, but it can be helpful to know how we will work together.
Before we start
We'll begin with a free, no-obligation phone consultation. This gives you an opportunity to tell me a little about what has brought you to counselling, find out more about how I work and ask any questions. We can then decide whether to arrange a first session.
Your first session
Our first session gives us more time to explore what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to get from it. We'll also talk through some practical aspects of working together and make sure that counselling with me feels right for you.
Ongoing counselling
Counselling is open-ended, so there is no set number of sessions you need to have. Some people choose to come for a shorter period, and others find longer-term counselling helpful. Sessions last 50 minutes and we'll continue for as long as the work feels useful.
Reviews
Every six weeks, we'll take some time to consider how you feel counselling is going, whether it continues to meet your needs and whether there is anything we might want to do differently.
Ending counselling
You're free to end counselling at any time. Wherever possible, I encourage us to have a final session so that we can reflect on the work we've done, what has changed and what you want to take forward with you.
